Young Waikato Women's Wellbeing
Wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Our Young Waikato Women’s Wellbeing Baseline Report revealed that young women and sex/gender diverse people in our region experience lower wellbeing than the national average.
Top priorities identified include safe and stable environments, holistic wellness, and better access to services, especially for those aged 16–24 and those living outside urban centres. The report also highlighted the need for inclusive spaces, financial literacy, and vocational support.
These insights are shaping our focus on how we can support young Waikato Women's wellbeing. We’re turning data into action through amplifying voices, creating opportunities, and advocating for systemic change so that every young woman and gender-diverse person in Waikato can live a life they value.
Co‑designing Wellbeing
Our wellbeing programmes to support young Waikato women are built through co‑design. This means young women don’t just participate, they help shape and lead what happens next.
Using findings from our wellbeing research, we facilitate co‑design workshops and in-depth focus interviews with young women aged 13–30 across the region. These workshops are hosted with local organisations and create space for participants to explore what wellbeing means to them, identify priorities, and design responses that fit their lives and communities.
Co‑design keeps our work grounded, locally relevant, and genuinely useful. The process itself supports wellbeing by building confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging. In-depth interviews help us understand what sits beneath the data and workshop insights.
The insights gained are then turned into practical programmes and activities delivered in local communities. These may include workshops, events, or longer form programmes delivered in partnership with local facilitators and organisations. Underpinning this work, is striving to better support young Waikato women's wellbeing.
If you’re a young Waikato woman interested in sharing your experiences, we’d love to hear from you.
